The State Archives in Warsaw set to the EMILE project - "Leaving Europe for America - early Emigrants Letter Stories" which is part of the EU Framework Programme "Culture 2000".
The EMILE project aims at disseminating to the wide public a part of European non-material cultural heritage included in letters, photographs, songs and memoirs of emigrants. The authors of the project would like to focus on the period of 1840-1920, the time when hunger, poverty, religious and political persecution made millions of people leave their homeland and look for a better place to live. The majority of Europeans set off to the United States. Letters written by emigrants to their relatives and acquaintances who stayed in their country are a very important source of information for comprehending and understanding the reasons of emigration. They illustrate great changes in the history of Europe and North America and enable us to understand the difference between old and new emigration/immigration. More...

The State Archives of Warsaw appeal to descendants of emigrants coming from Masovia Region, who are in possession of letters, photos or memoirs of their ancestors, to provide access to them so that they can be exhibited, or to hand them over to our holdings as a complement to our collection of records related to the history of Polish emigration.
